Japenese Encephalitis(Ixiaro)

Japenese Encephalitis(Ixiaro)

Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus is the leading cause of viral encephalitis in several Asian countries. This disease is transmitted by mosquito bite which breed mainly in rice fields. Risk of JE are higher if travellers plan to visit rural agricultural areas for more than a month but occasionally cases are reported from urban areas as well. Risk of infection for short-term travelers is very low, but cases do occur.

Ixiaro vaccine is indicated for the prevention of disease caused by Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) in adults. Active immunization consists of 2 doses Ixiaro given 28 days apart. Older JE-VAX vaccine is no more available in Canada which required 3-dose schedule.
